GE Canada and Ryerson Futures Inc. recently celebrated the official launch of a Calgary-based accelerator to support the growth of Industrial Internet and energy-related startups. Called Zone Startups Calgary (ZSC), the program will foster new enterprises that focus on power generation, transmission and usage, the oil and gas sector, renewables and other technology areas.
“Calgary has a strong and growing startup community,” says Elyse Allan, president and CEO of GE Canada. “Zone Startups Calgary will collaborate with this important ecosystem opening another window to help commercialize and scale opportunities, ultimately enabling greater diversification in the Alberta economy.”
Companies within the accelerator will benefit by having access to GE’s global market reach, innovations, and product and service teams, as well as Predix, GE’s software platform for scalable industrial enterprise solution.
They’ll also leverage the methodology Ryerson Futures uses to operate accelerator programs in Toronto and Mumbai, which have seen more than 100 companies raise over $160 million in venture capital over the past three years. ”We’re looking forward to helping support and drive innovation in Alberta,” says Matt Saunders, president of Ryerson Futures, a non-profit affiliated with Ryerson University that helps startups with hands-on strategic and tactical guidance.
